Veronica,
I am a new mother of triplet boys, born on July 24, so they are just about a month old now. I have been listening to the Mommy's Milk podcast since about halfway through my pregnancy, and it has been very helpful.
My boys were born at about 37 weeks, which is great for triplets. They seem to latch on okay but I guess because they are a bit premature, their sucking strength is still not quite good enough to get all the milk they need. So my lactation consultant recommended that I concentrate on pumping for the first several weeks to get my milk supply up, which it almost is now. I still put them to the breast once or twice a day each, but they only usually get about 10 mL each time, so almost all of their volume is still coming from my pumped milk with a little bit of formula as well to round out the supply. We use the Second Nature bottles.
In the next couple of weeks I'll need to start transitioning them to more breast feeding and less pumping. Since I have three of them, it is pretty hard for me to just commit to leaving one on the breast all day as each boy figures it out, since I still need to pump for his two brothers, both to keep up my total supply and since I don't want to have to give them too much formula. And keeping all three on the breast is obviously not possible. Even the double football hold is very hard right now, since I usually need to hand express some milk for them. So I kind of have to do them one at a time still.
So finally my question - do you have any suggestions for how to make this transition a bit easier? I'm kind of intimidated and frustrated by the whole process. But I can't wait to be able to feed all three of them myself and unchain myself from the pump. I'm certainly going to ask my lactation consultant for advice on this too (shes currently out of town), but I thought it would be a good topic for you to discuss on the podcast.
Thank you so much for your help in both this and all the past episodes that I've already listened to.
Peace,
Carol
