Hi All, I work for a small company and instead of working out of a "traditional" office in an office park, we work out of an old house on land that used to be an apple orchard.

I came back from the holidays to find rat droppings all over my personal office and throughout the house. We have yet to see an actual rat but are almost positive they are the source of the droppings (some of our food that was out on the kitchen counter had been nibbled on as well).

My boss is very animal friendly (she lets us bring our dogs to work :)) and doesn't want to hire an exterminator that will kill the rats, she just wants them lured out of the house and then have something put down so that they don't come back.

My question is, in the time it takes her to find a pest control company that can do this (if there is such a thing) is it dangerous for me to be here? :S I'm currently 21 weeks pregnant and another woman in my office is 25 weeks pregnant...

Thank you for the guidance!

Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Bummer about the rats! I have no idea if it's safe or not but we had a person on a podcast awhile ago talking about a call in service to find out if certain things are unhealthy for your unborn babe or you during pregnancy. Here is the website:
www.ctispregnancy.org

Check it out and see if someone there may be able to speak to your concerns of rats around the office.

Good luck to you!

Dear Sharon,
My husband and I just defeated a terrible infestation of rats in our house with the help of two exterminators. You might want to suggest to your boss that she research rats. They are one of the most successful animals in world history (very smart and so strong that they can escape most humane traps). They are very hard to exterminate. I fear that trying to banish them humanely might either take a very long time or be impossible. Your boss might want to research how quickly they breed and how many babies they can produce in a very short period of time (something like 30,000 in no time at all!). My husband thinks rats are adorable and hesitated to call an exterminator, but after doing some research he forked out the money for two!
Good luck,
Jill Brook, mother of 3 month old Sophia who survived the rats with her horrified parents!
