I have a birth story and advice thing written up that is 6 pages in Word, so I'll keep this really short. However, if you're intrigued and want to read the whole thing, let me know - I'll email it to you!

My doctor surprised us at my 38 week appointment by ordering an induction due to my blood pressure. We checked in to the hospital about 6 hours after my morning appointment, around 6:30pm. They put the Cervidil in that night, took it out the next morning and started the Pitocin.

About 8 1/2 hours into my first bag of Pitocin, and about an hour after they broke my water (OMG that hurt), I got the epidural. I'm so glad I did. It was 13 1/2 hours after getting the epidural that I had my baby boy!

I had quite a bit of pain even with the epidural - from 12:00-4:00am I was absolutely miserable. Writhing in pain, feeling totally nauseated (puked once)...

I woke up at 4:00am and I knew something was different. I pushed the patient controlled analgesic button, hit the nurse call button, and after she checked me she said we were ready to start pushing!

An hour later our baby was born!

Miles Joseph was born at 5:00am on Thurs., July 24th (approx. 34 hours after checking in). He weighed 8 lbs. 0 oz. and is 20.5 inches long! He had some respiratory distress at first and spent just a few hours in the NICU, then dealt with some jaundice and dropped 13% of his birth weight so we had to stay an extra night. But we're both home now and doing great!

Huh? You were in pain from 12 - 4am but woke up at 4:00 am? Were you actually sleeping through this pain?

Did you puke from the pain or the meds?

Inquiring minds want to know....:)

I fell asleep a few times but kept waking up when the pain would get too intense. I was so worn out and getting really weak because I hadn't eaten in 24 hours. I was really worried I wouldn't have enough strength to push!

I am SO GLAD I kicked our family members out of the room around midnight because I was so miserable and my mom probably would have had a heart attack from seeing me in so much pain!

I'm not sure if the puke was from the pain or the meds - it was almost 12 hours after my epidural, but I had recently starting hitting the Patient Controlled Analgesic button as much as I could (the darn thing took forever to kick in!) so maybe it WAS from the meds! :-)

Here's a full version of my birth story in case anyone is interested. It's 6 pages long in Word and includes my story plus some random thoughts on breastfeeding and postpartum recovery.

It definitely falls into the Too Much Info. category at times, so read at your own risk! :-)

Thank you so much for sharing your complete birth story. And for being so honest about how you felt after the birth. Usually people only share up to when baby is out... Its nice to know its not all "roses" after but it does get better!

I am always amazed at the role the doctor plays during the birth, no matter how many birth stories I read it always seems like they are so patronizing. I guess they are necessary just in case something does go wrong.

Once again thank you for sharing! I have a good 22 weeks to go before my time comes and I am trying to learn as much of possible about the different experiences people have!

Hope Miles is taking to breastfeeding and you are getting enough sleep!

Take care,
Chanda
