Hey Everyone,
I just found out I failed my 1 hour glucose test and have to take the 3 hour test. I am freaking out. I really don't want to have gestational diabetes. My doctor told me to eat extra carbs 3 days before my test, but that seems counter-intuitive. Does anyone have any ideas or have had to do this too?

The big thing is not to worry about it! A lot of people 'fail' the the 1 hour test. I bet you had some ice-cream or cake or something sugary the night/day before without thinking about it.

I was given a tip from a friend of mine who did the same thing. Stay away from sugar for 3 days before the next test. No cookies, ice-cream, chocolate etc (yip all the good stuff) and I'm sure it'll come out fine. (Just take some with you for afterwards!)

Even if you do have G.D., it's not all that hard to control, usually diet and exercise will correct it (under guidance), and if not that, then you will be given some medication.

The big thing though, is that the more you worry about it, the worse EVERYTHING will be. So try and take it easy on yourself and don't worry about it. I think out of the people I know maybe 40-50% 'fail' and then 'pass' the 3 hour.

Look after yourself.

Hi Lili,

During both of my pregnancies, I also failed the one hour test but not the three hour, and a few other friends failed the first and not the second. I was told I failed the hour test on a Friday and was to take the test the following Thurs. During that time I was told to limit my white carbs and refined sugar products which I did. I made sure I didn't eat lots of carbs and sweets the day and night before the three hour test.

I hear it could easily be controlled by diet and exercise, if you do have it. I'm sure you're worried as I was both pregnancies actually. But really, so many people pass the second and not the first so you are most likely ok.

At the three hour test you'll have your blood drawn then drink the sugar stuff. Then every hour for the next three hours you'll have blook drawn. Bring a good book
as you are to stay at the dr. office the whole time.

Thanks Alice & Patti for your kind words and suggestions.

I took the test yesterday and just found out that I passed! What a relief. The test wasn't so bad, it was just the fasting before hand that was hard for me. My appointment was at 8 am and I stopped eating and drinking the day prior at 6 pm (the lab said 5 pm and my doctor said 10 pm). You do get blood taken 4 times, but REALLY it's not that bad.

If anyone else has to take this test, just make sure you schedule your appointment as early as possible in the morning. My doctor recommended eating your regular diet three days before, but adding some additional carbs and fruit. The additions were 2 pieces of wheat toast and a 10 oz. glass of apple juice or 2 corn tortillas and 2 oranges. I actually didn't follow this advice and ate only proteins and veggies the 3 days before. But I really felt terrible the whole time and don't recommend this.

Here are the blood levels you need to pass the 3 hour glucose test:

Fasting - less than 95 mg/dl
1 hour - less than 180 mg/dl
2 hour - less than 155 mg/dl
3 hour - less than 140 mg/dl

I have just found alot of conflicting information about this 3 hour test, so I hope this helps anyone who needs it.

Just stay positive and despite the results you need to do what's best for your baby.

Hi, I am 10 weeks pregnant- first time mom. I have Hypothyroidism. Wondering if any Moms out there have had any experience with "Thyroid issues" and Maybe have a idea in what to expect with a underactive thyroid during pregnancy.
