DW and I just got confirmation that we're having a little girl. I am sitting here looking at the untra sound pics allowing it to sink in. But I have a question. Since ultrasounds go through skin, muscles and organs. How can you tell those are "girl parts"? I can see the hip bones, but I don't see anything else that would cause me to think it was a girl. Maybe it's a "late bloomer" boy? I don't know this is all so complex. Thoughts?

I am a cardiac sonographer, so I can't say SPECIFICALLY how the OB ultrasound studies are structured, but in general, ultrasound physics principles allow that each of the structures which sound "bounces off of" has a different intensity and look different on the image. An ultrasound technician can distinguish each of these from the others. Further, they may not be looking where you are or may have used a "process of elimination"-if you don't see anything from 5 different angles, it's probably not there. I can tell you that, when we saw my son on US, it was VERY OBVIOUS that he had boy parts. If your baby was going to develop boy parts, it would have happened several weeks before they scheduled your ultrasound. Good luck and enjoy your little girl.

Thank you skipnjif. I really was stumped on this.
