Hey all, just thought i'd share my story. Hawking was born on the 30th of July 2008 one day early. I'm due with Hawks' little sister on the 11th of Jan 2010 so there might be another story up here then.
On the day of Hawks birth I woke up with green vaginal discharge! Much to my horror. It was kind of army green meets lime green in colour and showed no sign of stopping. So I jumped on the net to find out what this could be. I was having mild cramping but thought nothing of it as i'd gotten used to random twangs during pregnancy. I then rang my mum at work and finally the midwife clinic at my local hospital and all sources said that it was most likely meconium (baby poop). So hawking had pooped himself while still inside me! gross. The midwife said i should probably go to the hospital to get checked out, but since the closest hospital which delivers is in the next town (a half an hour car trip on the highway) i was in no rush. Finished packing my bags, assembled the team (my sister and partener ben) and we headed to the hospital. I started experiencing first contractions which i could actually feel in the car on the way, checked into the hospital at 11am. Midwives confirmed that it actually was meconium. They said this can be from either feotal distress or just a sign of the baby being over mature. So they could measure Hawks heartbeat more accurately they attached a device thing to his head inside me, which was quite uncomfortable when they first attached it and left only a small red circle on his head once it was removed when he was out. Labour progressed streadily from there. The only kind of hiccup was when they sent in a trainee person to insert a drip. She tried putting it in both my hands before apologising and saying she'd get someone else. I had my eyes closed while she was trying and when i opened my eyes both my hands were covered and dripping with blood. My mum said she could clearly see that the girl kept shoving the needle right through both sides of my veins rather than along them and the next day both the entire backs of my hands were blue and bruised and quite painful. Thanks! When the doctor came back she managed to put the drip in first go in 2 seconds. The drip was for general fluids and they decided to give me stuff to make my labour speed up. Can't remember what it's called but this stuff made my contractions way worse. They checked me about an hour before he was born and said i was only 5cm dialated. At this point my contractions were right on top of each other, no break inbetween and excrutiating. So i asked for an epidural. This last hour before he was born was the worst. I think mostly because i felt i was waiting sooo long for the anesthesiologist and the epidural (he never arrived by the way) and because i felt disheartened by only being 5cm dialated after so much work. So during these never ending contactions my body just suddenly started pushing of it's own accord. The midwife heard me make a grunty push noise and said "are you pushing?" i nodded since i was long past the ability to speak and she says "don't push!" since the doctor had said i was only 5cm not very long ago it can be bad if you push too soon and your bodies not ready but i had no say in the matter, my body was just doing it i couldn't stop it. So the midwife rushed over and checked me and says "we're going to have a baby here very soon" and started rushing around the room to get things ready. the doctor didn't arrive in time so the midwife delivered him. It only took a few good pushes and he was out. This was at 8pm so between arriving at the hospital and him being born was 9 hours of which there was only an hour where i felt like i couldn't handle it. They passed him to me and he was the most beautiful thing ever. i kept saying how gorgeous he was and the midwives were laughing at me. he had a super strong suck reflex and latched on straight away. which turned out to be not so good for the first night since he was only happy when sucking something. which happened to be my nipples the whole first night until i rang my mother in desperation saying "bring a dummy!!" so they stitched me up which took forever. they said i had lots of little tears everywhere, so nothing major but meant it too a long time while they put like 1 or 2 stitches in lots of different places. so that took about an hour where i couldn't hold him and had to listen to him cry while my partener held him. oh and the anesthesiologist turned up then too. But the feeling you get when you get to hold your baby for the first time is the best in the world. Nothing can compare. And i'm super excited and ready for my next due in 14 weeks! Fingers crossed everything goes alright! Last edited by kameha; 10-06-2009 at 06:50 PM. |
