I decided not to make the pricey investment in the cloth diapers. I really couldn’t get past the diaper sprayer. And I have used disposable diapers for the past two years of Nolan’s young life and now Garrett’s.

Garrett came down with a diaper rash that I couldn’t get rid of and took him in to the pediatrician. Yes, it was that bad! Blisters, screaming, and angry red skin. Turns out it was a yeast infection to boot!

I hear how cloth diapers can minimize diaper rash. My mom, God bless her, gave me some money to buy some cloth diapers. I called my cloth diaper friends and asked for suggestions and advice. I came to my conclusion and made my purchase.

I went with adjustable sized diapers and used them for the duration of Garrett’s rash. I thought they were okay. They weren’t mind blowing or a conversation starter for me although I know there are women out there who can’t imagine using anything but cloth diapers on their baby’s bottoms. I eventually stopped using them completely and went back to my disposable ways.

But then Nolan got a diaper rash. It was disturbingly fast. I changed his diaper, loaded up the car, got to the store and he was grabbing his crotch telling me, “Ow.” I pulled back the diaper that he wore for about a total of forty-five minutes and my heart broke. On the inside of his thigh he was rubbed raw. I did the best I could but since it was on the floor of the Carter’s outlet I had to minimally wipe and slap on the diaper cream.

I scrapped the rest of the day’s plans and went home to give him a bath. I let him run around naked to let the air work some magic. About 20 minutes later Nolan has gone into Garrett’s room and took a dump on Garrett’s floor. By the time I found him he had finger painted a few choice walls.

Now what?! While scouring the carpet I found the cloth diapers stashed under the crib. BINGO! Duh! I struggled for a minute or two while wrestling my little guy down. But the diaper went on and no more “Ow”.

It’s been three days in cloth diapers and I have come to some conclusions. I like the convenience of disposable diapers. I’m not worried I’m gonna have to do laundry to make it to the next diaper change. They are an investment. But they are wonderful to have a few on hand for those days where disposables are just not doable.

So I have found my grey area. Have some on hand!
